A Farmer About It

I never meant for the freezer that died tragically to be a farmer about it. I wailed at the unfairness of it and then in the ways of farmers and shepherds and stewards, I pulled him to my butcher table. Each pass of the knife a prayer, a lament, a gratitude, a benediction. This act of transformation beyond the pale of the immense intimacy that is the usual intimate act of eating. Food nourishment carried to the mouth opened to allow engines of sustenance into a sacred vessel passed beyond the walls of the stomach to begin a conversation of place and time and light at the cellular level.
