If companies choose to optimize for shareholder value, they will inevitably destroy trust capital over the long term. Facebook could not have known in 2007 that by 2016, bad actors would use its data to meddle in US politics. But it has a responsibility to safeguard against that given what it knows or could have easily surmised pre-2016. Maintaining trust requires accountability.
