What Is the Carolingian Script?
Charlemagne imposed the Carolingian script of the Franks throughout the empire. And it became the standard script of the later Holy Roman Empire after his death. But these were not considered lowercase letters at the time. There really wasn't a distinction between upper case and lowercase early on. These simplified handwritten letters were just considered a different way of writing traditional Roman letters.
