The Bank of England's Plan to Buy Up Government Bonds
The Bank of England was planning on engaging in what we might call quantitative tightening. This has all been scuppered by the fiscal event, which caused a meltdown in the market for government guilt. So rather than selling bonds, it's had to buy them up again. Some people have said this is an example of what we call fiscal dominance. And they're trying to keep interest rates low in the economy really to reduce the servicing costs of debt. But I suppose in this particular case, well, we've got all these unfunded tax cuts coming through. The markets take fright and then the Bank of England feels it has to step in.
