The Large Numbers Problem
In the census, following the Exodus from Egypt, Numbers 146, the number of Israelite males older than 20 years of age is 603,550. At the second census, Numbers 2651, there are 601,730. These figures imply that the total population of the fledgling nation of Israel was somewhere between two and three million. If you've got two to three million people, it would take weeks or months just to get past a single signpost point. There literally isn't enough time in the Exodus itinerary for that kind of thing to happen by the Bible's own record of things.
