The battle of the trench as it later became known was fought over a month between January to February of 627. The siege was unsuccessful, and after a month, the Meccans looked back and realized that they had suffered just horrendous losses. Muhammad responded by sending in about 3,000 troops in order to punish the local tribes. But this being Roman held territory, the Byzantines, or the Romans, sent in about 10,000.
