The Unknown in Freud's the Desire of the Other
The book is a theory a Lacanian theory of religion. The religious individual is perhaps initially a person who experiences the world of appearance and then feels that behind this appearance is some sort of otherness that we cannot penetrate. Freud even in the very brief passage where he introduces this idea of the unknown thing in the other says this provides the template it provides this sort of first formative experience of the unknown.
