HD Wells guessed that someone would split the atom in 1933. John Cockroft and Ernest Walton did that a year early. All the early experiments, they can see more energy than they produce. Einstein has never even thought about nuclear bombs. No way. Just hadn't even occurred to him that this was a thing that could happen. Other physicists who ended up working on the bomb like Niels Bohr and Enrico Fermi thought they were about 30 years away.
