Nero and the Fires of Antium
Tacitus cast Nero as a victim of a salacious rumor, despite the emperor's honest attempts to direct a relief effort. The fact that so much of the emperor's own personal property was destroyed in the fire is another strong indication that Nero probably had nothing to do with it. These are not the actions of a man who wanted to watch Rome burn. 64 AD just happened to be the unlucky year and Nero was the unlucky emperor.
