The Coexistence of Religion and Science in the Middle Ages
In medieval Christendom, you talk about natural philosophy and mathematics. But there was no real sense that science exists as an entity of knowledge outside the wider body of knowledge. The old metaphor was that there were two books that God had created. His book of words, the scriptures, and his book of works, nature. That principle that the created world should be studied has deep, deep roots.
