Tolstoy was less interested in such mystical explanations and more into the millions of causes which produced history. Joseph Demestra believed that only religion understood the inner rhythms, the deeper currents of the world. Tolstoy didn't deny the worth of science in its own realm, but simply saw it as trivial next to the question of individual action, morality, and politics. These questions could never be answered by science because the proportion in them of submerged, uninspectable life is too high.
