We do not regard the natural environment as being this ly thing that sustains us. Rather, it is just a source of natural resources which if we didn't exploit by creating knowledge about how to use these natural resources in new and interesting ways, would quickly kill us. We need knowledge of how to survive in these environments. absent civilization, almost none of us would have the knowledge of what it takes to survive.
