MAS: A Life-Threatening Illness

MAS is a form of secondary HLH and a common complication of rheumatologic conditions such as systemic GI. Characteristic clinical features of MAS are high non-remitting fever, generalized lymph node enlargement, central nervous system dysfunction and hemorrhagic manifestations. Recent studies indicate a mortality of around 8 to 10%. Early recognition of MAS is often challenging given the lack of a single pathognomic clinical or lab feature of this condition.
