Dominic had to say heretics who believed not just in a single God but two opposing divine principles, one good and one bad. He began by founding convents of nuns who were to be even more austere than the most austere heretics. Though his followers took vows of poverty, he didn't emphasize poverty in the way that Francis did. Emphasized was learning. There was that wonderful quotation from St Thomas Aquinas, saying that the vocation was first of all to contemplate.
