The Safety of Short-Term Steroid Use

Dr. Michael Schul is an EM doctor at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto. He says short courses of steroids are relatively safe, but longer courses can be associated with significant adverse effects. A study out of Taiwan found a 1.8 to 2.4-fold increased risk for GI bleeding, sepsis and heart failure within the first month after initiation or drug therapy.
