Introduction
In 1851 a barber in Sacramento, California was getting ready to close up his shop. A white miner with a thick beard came in and said he needed a haircut. He told the barber that he had just hit gold on his claim after months of slinging mud. The man then showed him some flakes of gold caught in his beard. They were worth five dollars each.
