480 thousand people died of starvation in ireland in 17 forty. That's a hundred years before the famine of 18 forty. Why did it happen? There was a particularly bad winter. A load of potatoes froze. And you have a peasant population with no land, and all they have is potatoes and no money to buy anything that isn't potatoes. So that's how 500000 people starve.
