The Role of Rhetoric in Politics
The idea of smart is heavily tied to higher education and technological sophistication. Mark O'Mara: We need to take rhetoric seriously because we can learn a lot from it. He was referring to what I call the rhetoric of rising, the idea that in America, everyone should be able to rise as far as their talents and hard work will take them. The phrase only really comes in in presidential rhetoric in the 1980s with Ronald Reagan.
