Even though theories that presume a multiplicity of ancestors from which different races emerged independent of each other are largely dismissed, we behave as if we truly emerged along genealogically parallel tracks. We suppose that what makes up our bodies is derived vertically, but the situation is infinitely more complex than we or Morton imagined.
