Is Consent the Only Ethical Thing?
The Helsinki code of 1964 as I understand it actually refined the notion of consent still further. It used to just be that you mustn't co-erces deceived or fraud. But now if you look not just at the Helsinkicode of 1964 but of the latest edition 2004 and they are revising it again,. If you look at this you discover that they are asking the research subject to understand extremely complicated matters like the research design and the aim of the research, financial structures and so on. "It's quite questionable whether everybody who is capable of consenting to research can understand all this detail," he says.
