The complexity of the wave function is simply a starting point, right? It's the first ingredient. And then you're going to invoke some other principle or fact that you want to be true. Stephen Hawking wrote a paper about this actually. He had something based on time symmetry and path and it rolls which eventually led him to say 'that's why the wave function has to be complex'
