Democrats have a tendency to make arguments that only liberals can hear, which is why we lose independence who tend to lean right and tend to be cranky. But for the first time in history, Americans now believe that there are more extremists on the right than on the left. So what that means is that any Democrat running now has to brand themselves as the antidote of chaos. It's all fear-based. If you give a conservative the alternative between authoritarianism and what they perceive to be chaos, they'll pick authoritarianism every time because it feels safer to them. They will blindly give away power to a government that promises to shield them from chaos. The Democrats are just sober, effective government
