Introduction
Hugh capet was elected king of the franks at noyon. The carolingian house had failed in the west. Charles, duke of lower lorraine committed treason by betraying the franks for the germans. His grandfather was robert the first, while his great uncle was odo the first. On his mother's side, he was related to the autonians, who were then the emperors of the germans,. This pedigree helped to legitimize hugh though for the rest of his life, he carried the stink of usurpation.
