The Importance of Lying

Killing another human being, especially in societies where incurring a blood feud with his kinsman was the only means of justice. Lying is devastating to the liar because it creates this internal tension that ends up expressing itself in unbidden thoughts and suspicions and dreams. Ritual and mythology in part function to structure these opposing feelings in a way that discharges the tension and frees the individual from that ambilence.
