Grass Notes
In some grasses axillary buds, instead of growing straight up through the sheath, come out. This may be seen in the underground stolens of panicum repins and in the ordinary aerial branches of arundadona. Branches that pierce through the sheaths are called extra vaginal branches. Notes may be pale or coloured, glaborous, hairy or bearded with long hairs. But if the stem is bent down or tipped over by accident, notes begin to grow longer on the lower side.
