The key that unlocked my understanding of English grammar was when Alex Tilbury started talking about the idea of distance and separating the ideas of tense and time. In a language like Polish there is a similar phenomenon that tense and time are often divorced we can see it most simply if we say okay I'm in the kitchen my wife is there and I say oh I'm putting the kettle on to make a cup of tea will you have one as well That's me addressing my wife and I use will as a modal verb in its present form. But notice crucially that the time doesn't change we're still talking about the present moment looking towards the future It's the verb form the tense that changes
