As per NFHS5, 27% of rural women across the country between the ages of 20 and 24 were married before the age of 18. Shruti: There are several factors that are really driving child marriages in India including poverty and even development. She says instead of addressing these core underlying issues, we fear that criminal justice response will aggravate some of these already existing concerns.
