Plato believed the soul needs training in aesthetic and spiritual good. Music reflects those ca idoscopic spiritual states more readily than any other activity, it will either purify or corrupt the soul. The rhythms of a life must be orderly and brave. Rhythm and disharmony are akin to evil speaking and the evil temper. But the opposites are the sober and the good disposition. One speculation holds that education in music is most sovereign because rhythm and harmony find their way to theinmost soul and take strongest hold upon it, imparting grace.
