In psycho nelytic theory the phallus is a signifier of lack and sexual difference. Lucy's new woman status coalesces on the theoretical function of penetration. Her curiosity about sex finds expression in the encounter with count dracula, however deadly it is. A young victorian woman, driven by carnal desires, transgresses the boundaries of civilization. In the imagination of a repressed society, lucy hooking up with the demonic monster is code for her pre existing lustful tendencies which she will inevitably be punished.
