The Union's War on Slavery
Newly freed black people gave assistance to the union's war effort. They are growing food for union forces, serving as scouts and spies. A lot of white union soldiers don't necessarily want to have to do their own laundry or clean up after themselves. So what you'll have are people in the camps who will do that work for them, for pay,. And so you've got that kind of work.
