Theramenes and the Frogs

Diodorus, a historian active in the time of julius, caesar presents a generally favorable account of theramenes. Theramines death has become famous for its drama, and the story of his final moments has been repeated over and over throughout classical history ography. Because he met his death defying tyranny, it is easy to see why some throughout history have idealized theramene. But there is perhaps a dose of truth in the reproaches that critius hurled at him across the floor of the council chamber. Still, although theramenes may have been shifty and unscrupulous where means and methods were concerned, in his main objective was perfectly sincere.
