The Fragmentary Grammar of Dionysus

The room is in odd shape. More than half of it comes straight out of a brand book for a Dionysian belt. By what mechanism, a set of postural and gestural grammar was established and then propagated throughout the Roman empires is quite unknown. And the fact is the artist was able to draw on that tradition in order to create the fresco cycle. So we're not looking at a Renaissance artwork in terms of expressiveness and artistic innovation. We're looking at an expression of art that is naturalistic in a Renaissance-like way.
