Cooper's Fiction Isn't a Map of Reality
A group from san francisco was outraged that cooper depicted abused tean agers in his work. They believed this incited his readers to abuse tea nagers, as if fictional characters should have the same rights as people. Cooper's fiction isn't a map of reality, but neither does it map on to reality. As one character in his novel, the slutz, says, our fantasy lives are not a police state. In cooper's work, imagination always outstrips propriety and the moral imperatives of the present. For this reason it will endure. Make space for it on your bookshelf if you dare.
