In the 90s when I was studying it was really transitioning directors wanted somebody who could run around the stage and interact with the other characters. It's very hard to be an opera singer and have this set timing for your emotional journey. But directors are so creative these days they have them the choreography lots of super numeraries oftentimes which bolsters what they're trying to convey.
