Most of the low-level crypto primitives are actually written in assembly that is bespoke for those platforms. On x86, there are instructions called ad-syax and adoax that let you have two carry chains but the compiler can't even generate them. So in order to get good performance for a large integer arithmetic, you actually have to write assembly.
