If you look carefully through genesis and exodus, you see this happening many times. Sometimes entire narratives or entire events, are repeated and told differently each time. For example, earlier in genesis, when god creates human kind, it's told twice. These two stories don't really line up. And so they have a filled in. They've created madrash or commentaries that sort of fill in some extra material to make them seem to line up. But the only reason why the situation arose in the first place is because of this doubling, ok? You see similar things in the story of noah.
