The hummed curve appears in numerous different locations in your book. It's meant to illustrate the way that one of the uses of mathematics is kind of a mental force multiplier. There are problems which seem like different problems on the surface but mathematically are really the same. Of course he has its own individuating features that are special and you need to pay attention to, but in some sense structurally it's quite similar.
