Jung's Symbols of Transformation
The Red Book is Jung's response to what he saw as the inadequacies of the hero myth, which he explored at length in symbols of transformation. Sheri Ortenner argues that women have been seen as the symbol of something every culture demeans and determines to be of less value than the culture itself. Women come to symbolize nature because bodily functions like childbirth and menstruation seem to suggest a closer relationship to the rhythms of nature than does a man's biology.
