If we look at our two closest relatives, chimpanzees and bonobos, the males do nothing. They don't even know who their offspring are. And if we go back to gorillas, there are dads. And there's a dominant male, a few females in their offspring. So there is, you have to go way back in our evolutionary history to see fathering. How this arose in people is still debated.
