The Presence of God in the Temple

Ezekiel is in exile out in Babylon, about five years after they've been carried away from Jerusalem. In their day, the presence of God should be in the holy of holies in the temple back in Jerusalem at the mercy seat. So here's Ezekiel probably scratching his head saying, wait a minute, what is going on?
