The Loss of Continuity in Hiroshima
Guevara wanted to visit Hiroshima, where the U.S. used a nuclear bomb in World War II and killed as many as 140,000 people. Japan had also been subject to significant land reform after WWII; Cubans were looking for do's and don'ts. Guevara: "Not even the cruelest word could express the pain of Hiroshima" In 1962, Cuba was threatened with an invasion by the United States but Soviet military support kept it from happening.
