The History of the Cuban Revolution
Cuba had to get new machinery and so on from the Soviet Union, and the sociable countries but even you know this is sort of stuff that I discovered when I was doing the research for my first book. When their machinery breaks down, they can't get spare parts. But while its imports and exports were cut off by those early sanctions, Cuba at least had the option to turn to the USSR and the socialist block countries. So what, you know, it acts as a cushion. What's really significant is the way that after the collapse of the Soviet block, after the collapseof the Eastern European socialist countries, they revert to capitalism and Cuba is left alone.
