This is not a grim book, but i was thinking about it earlier because you were describing wild swans in the intergenerational story. It tells and while this book doesn't take you through the three generations in equal detail, it's mostly focused on the third generation of our protagonist, alice. The family legacy and lessons that have been passed down from one generation to the next are incredibly important to this story.
