How Did the Bauhaus Close?
Mies van der Roer was getting going with the architecture, finally doing what Gropius had set out to do. All of that really is just getting going in these last three years between 1930 and 1933. The Nazis offer a deal to the Bauhaus - you can carry on but they want two members of staff fired. That's Kandinsky and Ludwig Hilbessiner which has seemed particularly dangerous or subversive. Now those are terms that Miss van der Rohe and his colleagues were not going to accept so it decides to formally dissolve. And that's an interesting sort of attempt to retain some sort of autonomy in a very desperate situation.
