The great leap forward was a massive economic and social campaign led by the chinese communist party. Millions of people died in china during the great leap forward. Estimates range from as little as 15 million people dying to as many 55 million people dying. This is terrible stuff, but it's also a study in the tremendous balancing act and tremendous danger of effecting large scale change on a massive level too quickly.
