The Assassination of Lincoln

A railway attendant spotted a small carpet bag under Lincoln's seat in the President's car. Upon opening it, he discovered a grenade set to explode within 15 minutes with a force sufficient to kill everyone in the car. Some of the people watching out for Lincoln on this journey were from the Pinkerton National Detective Agency which had been founded by Scotsman Alan Pinkerton. Once Lincoln's whistle stop excursion reached Philadelphia, he was informed by two separate sources that a verified plot to assassinate him was being planned by a band of conspirators linked to the Knights of the Golden Circle.
