The Problem With Flashbacks in Tom Hanks
The last piece of the problem in this film is, like many flashbacks, these flashbacks don't really work. The flashbacks themselves have no structure to them, they are just there to elucidate. What's actually valuable if you want to connect to need, do not ask yourself why. Instead, ask yourself what? What does he feel? Where? When? How? These bring you to the subconscious mind where you can connect to the need.
