It's fairly rare for someone to want to use most of their time or money to help other. That is an unusual kind of psychological quirk, but I think humans just are very social animals. And probably these are like very strong evolutionary reasons why people who were useful to others and are good to have around were more successful in the evolutionary environment. So given how humans evolved in these very cooperative societies, that's not too surprising.
