Young girls were given huge doses of hormones, mostly so they wouldn't get too tall to be attractive to a man. Doctors at the time reported that girls given this treatment stayed two to four inches shorter than their predicted height. Later studies found that some of the medications used could reduce fertility and cause cancer.
