How Many Fans Do You Need to Make a Living?

How many readers do you need to make a living? I'm not asking you for sales of individual books. But there is this theory by Kevin Kelly, who was one of the founders of Wired magazine that like an artist or a band needs 1000 committed fans to make a live. In self publishing, it's probably a lot more than that. The biggest thing in self publishing is your email list. You've got to have a fan list because those people will get any preview notice from me of an upcoming book. And I will get 250 pre orders in two days.
